Diagnostic Characteristics
Sheviak and Catling (2003, Fl. North America, Vol. 26) provide the following characters of variety bulbosa to distinguish it from americana:

Bristles of lip whitish or color of lamina, sparse; lamina commonly with reddish markings on dull white, usually shorter than horns.

Range Comments
AK south to CA and east to the Bitterroot Divide in ID (Kartesz 2009).

Habitat
"Moist to dry, shady coniferous forests; 0-1600 m" (Sheviak and Catling, 2003, Fl. North America, Vol. 26).

Ecology
POLLINATORS
The following animal species have been reported as pollinators of this plant species or its genus where their geographic ranges overlap: Bombus centralis, Bombus fervidus, Bombus flavifrons, Bombus frigidus, Bombus melanopygus, Bombus mixtus, Bombus rufocinctus, and Bombus occidentalis (Ackerman 1981).
