General Description
Plants 25-65 cm tall; stems stout and rigid. Leaves flat to channeled, up to 1/2 culm length, 1-2 mm wide, auricles 0.5-2 mm long, firm and membranaceous. Inflorescence a many-flowered compact cyme; involucral bracts equal to or mostly exceeding inflorescence. Flowers bracteolate; perianth segments 3.5-6 mm long, outer series longer than inner, lanceolate-subulate, margins broadly scarious. Stamens 6, half as long as the inner perianth segments, anthers equal in length to filaments. Capsules oblong, equal to slightly less than the inner perianth length, completely 3-locular, meeting walls straight (not convacve); seeds 0.2-0.4 mm long, oblong, ends shortly apiculate (adapted from: Churchill, 1986, in Flora of the Great Plains).

Range Comments
Inland areas of Pacific Northwest (WA, OR, CA, ID, MT) recurring in NM, NE, KS, OK and TX sporadically east to MO, AR, and TN (Kartesz in prep. 2012).

Habitat
Moist to wet prairies, salt flats and slightly drier upland open woods; soils often sandy (Churchill, 1986, in Flora of the Great Plains).
