General Description
Cespitose from short thick rootstalks. Culms 2-7 dm tall. The crown with conspicuous scale-like sheaths. Spikes 3-8, gynaecandrous, well-defined, aggregate or the lower separate in a head 1-2 cm long; lower bracts usually only slightly prolonged, the upper scale-like; scales ovate, reddish brown with green midvein and hyaline margines. Perigynia 3.5-4 mm long, ovate, thick, planovconvex, strongly winged, obscurely nerved, abruptly narrowed to a beak about 1 mm long (adapted from: Moss and Packer, 1994, Flora of Alberta, 2nd ed., revised).
Lesica (2012) includes this specis in synonymy of C. pachystachya.
