Densely caespitose. Stems erect, 20–60 cm. Leaves: basal blades absent; cauline blades 1–4 mm wide. Inflorescence of 3 to 7 sessile, overlapping spikes, aggregated above, separate below; lowest bract inconspicuous. Spikes ovoid, 5–12 mm long, ascending, all similar; female flowers above, male below. Perigynia ascending, green to tan, lanceolate, flattened, wing-margined, 3.5–5.5 × 1.5–2 mm, tapered to the beak, 1.5–2.5 mm long, serrulate below, entire above; stigmas 2.
