Rhizomatous. Stems erect, 20–80 cm, tufted. Leaves: basal bladeless; cauline blades 2–5 mm wide, flat. Inflorescence of 3 to 5 well-separated, sessile spikes; the lowest bract greater than the inflorescence. Spikes unisexual, erect to ascending; the uppermost 1 or 2 male, linear; the lower female, 1–4 cm long, cylindric. Perigynia spreading to ascending, green to purplish, ovoid or obovoid, pilose, 3–4 mm long with a beak ca. 1 mm long with spreading teeth ca. 0.5 mm long; stigmas 3.
