Diagnostic Characteristics
The following combination of characters (Ball and Reznicek, 2003, Fl. North America, Vol. 23) present on var. aquatilis should separate it from var. dives: Spikes erect; perigynia usually obovoid, pale brown; staminate spikes usually 2–4.

Widespread across much of North America but mostly absent from the southern Great Plains (KS, OK, TX) and southeast (Kartesz 2009).
