General Description
Annual. Stems erect, branched, 30–150 cm. Herbage glabrate to puberulent, especially on the veins, poisonous. Leaf blades ovate, 6–18 cm long, sharply lobed. Inflorescence of solitary, axillary flowers. Flowers showy; calyx tubular, 3–5 cm long with short lanceolate lobes; corolla white to purple, funnelform, the tube 5–8 cm long, the limb 3–5 cm across with shallow, mucronate lobes. Fruit an erect, spiny to unarmed, ovoid capsule 2–4 cm long, subtended by a collar formed from the calyx base (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).
