General Description
Rhizomatous perennial. Stems ascending to erect, simple, 3–15 cm. Herbage glabrous below, glandular-pubescent above. Leaves petiolate, blades ovate, serrate, 1–2 cm long. Flowers: calyx 12–15 mm long, often purplish, teeth acute, upper tooth longer; pedicel 1 to 2 times as long as calyx; corolla 2–3 cm long, yellow, red-spotted, strongly bilabiate, lips spreading, palate bearded, closing the throat. Capsule 7–10 mm long (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

Our plants are variety tilingii.

Wet gravel, shallow water of streams, wet cliffs; upper subalpine to alpine (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

Ecology
POLLINATORS
The following animal species have been reported as pollinators of this plant species or its genus where their geographic ranges overlap: Bombus vagans, Bombus bifarius, Bombus centralis, Bombus flavifrons, and Bombus pensylvanicus (Thorp et al. 1983, Colla and Dumesh 2010).
