General Description
Annual or biennial with white-hairy foliage and yellow sap. Stems branched, to 50 cm. Leaves oblanceolate, deeply pinnately lobed, to 15 cm long; the upper ovate and clasping. Flowers solitary, long-stalked in upper leaf axils; sepals 2, 15–30 mm long; petals 4, orange to red with a black base, 20–35 mm long; stamens many. Capsules ascending, linear, slightly curved, 12–20 cm long, pubescent (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).
