General Description
Plants: Herbaceous (glandular-pubescent) annuals; taprooted.
Stems: Erect, often red, 8-20 cm in length, often with prostrate stems at the base.
Leaves: Cauline, opposite, short-petiolate, simple, stipulate; blades oblong to obovate, serrulate, 5-30 mm long.

Reproductive Characteristics
Flowers: Perfect, radially symmetrical, solitary or few-clustered on short pedicels in leaf axils; pistil 1; ovary superior; sepals separate, 5 in number, acuminate, 3-4 mm long; petals separate, 5 in number, white, hidden by the sepals; stamens 5 or 10.
Fruit: Capsule 5-chambered with several pitted seeds in longitudinal rows, globose, about 3 mm in length.
