General Description
Stems erect, 5–50 cm. Leaf blades green, fleshy, glabrous, triangular-hastate, to 8 cm long with entire to crenate margins. Inflorescence glomerules 3–10 mm in diameter, in upper leaf axils and a terminal spike. Flowers: calyx 3- to 5-parted, segments red, nearly distinct, <1 mm long; stamens 3. Seed punctate, ca. 1 mm (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

Diagnostic Characteristics
Montana has two varieties of Chenopodium capitatum:

* Variety capitatum
* Variety parvicapitatum

Range Comments
Throughout most of the boreal and north-temperate portions of North America (Lesica et al. 2022; Clemants and Mosyakin in Flora of North America [FNA] 2003).

Habitat
In Montana plants have been found along roadsides and in disturbed fields within the plains and valleys zones (Lesica et al. 2022).
