General Description
Stems erect to prostrate, 5–50 cm. Leaf blades green, fleshy, glabrous, ovate to triangular-hastate, to 6 cm long with entire to dentate margins. Inflorescence glomerules, 2–4 mm across, in axillary, simple to compound spikes. Flowers: calyx 3- to 4-parted, segments green to red, nearly distinct, up to 1 mm long; stamens 2 to 3. Diagnostic Characteristics
Vairety rubrum has a prostrate to spreading stem and shallowly dentate to entire leaf margins (Clemants and Mosyakin 2003 in Fl. N. Amer. Vol. 4).
Range Comments
In Montana mostly north central but also in Beaverhead County; AK to NS south to CA, NM, OH, and NJ (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).
