Snow-in-summer - Cerastium tomentosum
General Description
Rhizomatous mat-forming perennials with dense white covering of hairs; flowering stems erect, to 40 cm tall. Leaves 10-60 mm long, 2-8 mm wide. Inflorescence of 3-13-flowered cymes. Pedicels 10-40 mm long, ascending and straight. Flowers 12-20 mm diameter; sepals 5-7 mm, margins narrow and often scarious; petals 10-18 mm, 2-2.5x length of sepals, apex bifid; stamens 10; styles 5. Capsules 10-15 mm, slightly curved, up to 2x length of sepals; teeth 10, erect, margins convolute (adapted from J. K. Morton, 2005, in Flora N. America, Vol. 5).
Range Comments
Scattered occurences from WA to eastern Canada and south to VA; native to southeastrern Europe(Kartesz in prep. 2012; J,K. Morton, 2005, in Flora North America, Vol. 5). Used ornamentally as a ground cover.
