General Description
Biennial or short-lived perennial; the caudex often clothed in old leaf bases. Stems erect, usually simple, 10–50 cm. Leaves linear to narrowly oblanceolate, 2–10 cm long with entire to dentate margins. Petals 12–25 mm long, sometime orangish. Fruits spreading to ascending, 4-angled, 4–10 cm × 1–2 mm; pedicels spreading, 5–12 mm long; style 2–4 mm long (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

Ecology
POLLINATORS
The following animal species have been reported as pollinators of this plant species or its genus where their geographic ranges overlap: Bombus appositus, Bombus bifarius, Bombus centralis, Bombus rufocinctus, Bombus sylvicola, Bombus occidentalis, Bombus insularis, Bombus suckleyi, and Bombus kirbiellus (Macior 1974, Miller-Struttmann and Galen 2014).
