State Rank Reason (see State Rank above)
Lappula cenchrusoides occurs in eastern Montana, and is being treated as a synonym of Lappula fremontii var. fremontii. Many populations were reported as common and as occurring in habitats that are common within Montana, such as clay soils in rolling grassland and in sagebrush steppe. Most Montana occurrences have been reported since 1973 which could reflect taxonomy more than its presence/absence. The taxonomy of Montana's specimens need to be clarified and more current information on locations, population sizes, habitat, and threats needs to be brought forth to further refine its status.

General Description
Please refer to the State Rank Reason for its status and the following botanical literature for species identification:

Flora of the Great Plains (McGregor et al. 1986). This may not reflect the most current understanding of this plant.

Potential specimens should be provided to and verified at one of our State Herbaria:
University of Montana (MONTU), Montana State University (MONT), or Montana State University-Billings (MSUB).

Diagnostic Characteristics
The two rows of bristles (sometimes 3) on the nutlets are similar to L. squarrosa, but the latter has a longer corolla (2-3 mm) and shorter nutlets (3-4 mm long). Lappula occidentalis (often reported as L. redowskii) only has one row of bristles on the nutlets.
