Reported for Montana in Intermountain Flora Vol. 5. Unresolved as native. Possibly accidentally introduced at a reclamation area in Big Horn County.
General Description
Perennials or subshrubs. Cauline leaves opposite, 1-2 times pinnatifid, the lobes mostly linear to filiform, sometimes oblanceolate. Outermost phyllaries (calyculi) of 3–5+ ovate to oblong bractlets; inner phyllaries connate to above the middle, the lobes with scarious margins. Ray florets absent. Disc corollas yellow, often with red-brown nerves, throats shorter than lobes. Achenes 5–8 mm long; pappus of 2-3 retrosely hispid awns (adapted from Strother, 2006, Flora N. America Vol. 19; and Welsh et al., 1993, A Utah Flora, Second Ed.).
Diagnostic Characteristics
This species is most easily distinguished from the related Thelesperma subnudum by its taller stems (up to 80 cm tall) and the absence of ray flowers.
Range Comments
WY and SD south through UT and AZ to TX and Mexico; outlying occurrences in CA, OR, AR, MO, MN, MI, IL, and IN (Kartesz 2013, in prep.)
