Diagnostic Characteristics
Subspecies caudata differs from the other subspecies by the combination of its biennial, tap-rooted growth form, glabrous foliage, and the presense of a basal rosette of leaves that withers during the growing season.

Range Comments
Widespread across much of North America but mostly absent from the southeast and west of the Rocky Mountains (Kartesz 2009).
