General Description
Stems often in dense clumps and branching above, 10–30 cm. Leaf pairs 2–3, mostly cauline, the uppermost pair often reduced; blades ovate to ovate-lanceolate, margins irregularly serrate, apex acute; lower surface glandular, upper surface stipitate-glandular. Heads rarely only one but mostly 5 to 15. Involucres turbinate-campanulate. Phyllaries 10–16, ovate-lanceolate. Flowers yellow; rays 5–12. Achenes 4.5-7 mm long, black, hairy (hairs duplex) and stipitate-glandular. Pappus barbellate, bristles white (adapted from Wolf, 2006, Fl. N. America, Vol. 21).

Dry, exposed, rocky, alpine slopes, sometimes subalpine meadows; 1200–2500 m (Wolf, 2005, in Fl. North America, Vol. 21).
