General Description
Shrub 1–2 m. Herbage glabrate to puberulent, fragrant. Leaves trifoliate; leaflets ovate with rounded lobes; central leaflet the largest, 2–4 cm long. Inflorescence terminal and axillary, globular, hairy-bracteate racemes. Flowers: sepals reddish, ca. 1 mm long; petals yellow, ca. 2 mm long, pubescent below. Drupes subglobose, 5–7 mm wide, crowded on stem tips (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

Lesica (2012) treats this species as Rhus aromatica.

Ecology
This plant is intolerant to fire. After fire it may take many years to re-colonize.

POLLINATORS
The following animal species have been reported as pollinators of this plant species or its genus where their geographic ranges overlap: Bombus appositus, Bombus bifarius, Bombus fervidus, Bombus terricola, Bombus bimaculatus, Bombus griseocollis, Bombus impatiens, and Bombus insularis (Plath 1934, Thorp et al. 1983, Colla and Dumesh 2010, Colla et al. 2011).
