Stump Pixie-Cup Lichen - Cladonia botrytes

This species is common northward, but is found sporadically in Montana and east to the Black Hills and south to Colorado.
General Description
The thallus is two-parted, consisting of a foliose thallus and an erect podetium. The podetia are less than 1 cm tall, lack soredia, squamules, and definitive cups, and terminate into apothecia. The apothecia are usually present and pale brown
(McCune and Geiser 2009). Chemistry: Medulla weakly UV+ and P-
(McCune and Geiser 2009).
Range Comments
A widespread northern species extending southward to southern British Columbia and northwest Montana with disjuncts in Colorado and the Black Hills (McCune and Geiser 2009).
