General Description
Plants: Acrocarpous, the tufts green with brown below, growing in large patches (turfs) or cushions. Stems approximately 5-10 mm, enclosing a central strand; axillary hairs consisting of about 5 cells, the lower ones occasionally with wide walls (FNA 2007).

Leaves: Leaves flat against the stem when dry, spreading when wet, broadly lanceolate to ovate, tubular, firm; the base sheathing the stem slightly; apex acute; the costa single (FNA 2007).

Leaf Cells: Proximal cells rectangular, (2-)4-6:1, the walls thin; distal medial cells quadrate to short-rectangular, hexagonal, 1-2:1; distal margins differentiated with elongate cells, occasionally thick-walled, 1-stratose; ventral cells of costa short-rectangular or quadrate, in 4-5 rows, the transverse section elliptic or rounded, lacking an adaxial stereid band, guide cells 2-4 per layer in 1-2 layers; dorsal side of costa including a stereid band of substereid cells, elliptic or rounded in X-section (FNA 2007).

Hennediella heimii var. heimii: Present in Montana. Leaves are tubular, but not concave or hood-shaped; margins toothed; apex acute; costa terminating at apex (percurrent) (FNA 2007).

Hennediella heimii var. arctica: Leaves are concave and frequently cucullate; margins commonly smooth; apex generally obtuse; costa frequently terminating before the apex. Leaves 0.5-0.8 mm and usually considerably smaller than var. heimii (FNA 2007).

Phenology
Variety heimii: Capsules ripen June-July (FNA 2007).

Variety arctica: Capsules ripen in August (late summer) (FNA 2007).

Diagnostic Characteristics
Extensive variation occurs in the leaf border and dentition of the margin (FNA 2007).

Tortula obtusifolia is similar but has no hint of marginal teeth (FNA 2007).
