General Description
Plants: Acrocarpous (Vitt 1988). Growing in cushions or mats, sometimes compactly so, brilliant green above, brown below. Stems catkin-like, 5-20 mm in length, seldom branched, if at all; rhizoidal (FNA 2014).

Leaves: Upright when wet, 0.2-1.2 mm in length, nearly round to egg-shaped, strongly cupped, with a green base; margins smooth, flat above, faintly curved back and downward below, not bordered; apex hood-like, not transparent, acute to widely curved, typically with a short point (of 2 cells or more) in the lower leaves (but not in the upper leaves), the point occasionally transparent; costa ending before or seldom flush with the tip (FNA 2014).

Leaf Cells: Unistratose; lower laminal cells mostly nearly square; upper laminal cells erratically diamond-shaped, not porose (FNA 2014).

Phenology
Fruit ripens in summer (FNA 2014).

Range Comments
Endemic to western North America. Canada: BC, AB and QC; USA: WA and OR to MT, also CA and CO (FNA 2014). In Montana, known from Missoula County (Elliott 2016).

Habitat
Calcareous damp soil and rocks from moderate to high elevations (Elliott 2016).

Reproductive Characteristics
Fruiting unknown. Specialized vegetative reproduction by bulbils in leaf axils absent (FNA 2014).
