The Stejneger’s Scoter breeds in eastern Asia, from southeastern Siberia to the Kamchatka Peninsula and as far south as Mongolia. Breeding habitat is usually around small lakes and ponds in boreal forest and Arctic tundra. It winters mostly at sea, off China, the Korean Peninsula, Japan and the Kamchatka Peninsula (del Hoyo et al. 2020).
Stejneger’s Scoter is accidental in North America. It was first detected in Montana in 2015.
