This species breeds across northern Eurasia and winters from central Eurasia south to northern and central Africa. It has also become a frequent winter visitor along both coasts of North America (Marks et al. 2016). In Montana the species is an uncommon migrant with fewer than 10 records reported in the typical year (MTNHP 2019).
