The Tricolored Heron typically breeds in coastal habitats such as estuaries, salt marshes, river deltas, lagoons and mangrove swamps. This species is a year-round resident along and near the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, and ranges into the coastal plain of the southeastern U.S. (Frederick 2020).
Tricolored Heron is an accidental species in Montana and was first detected in the state in 2019.
